You’ve Never Heard of Me

Hello, Comic Readers. My name’s Nick Tapalansky (nicktapalansky here on the Tumblr). I’ve been writing comics professionally for about seven years now. I’m here to talk about the ancient and arcane art of making “indie comics,” which I think just means “anything that you make up that isn’t owned by somebody else” these days.

You’ve never heard of me. That’s okay. In fact, that’s the point of our first installment. And just why is that, precisely?

Because nobody’s heard of you, either. And that isn’t going to stop you from making your own awesome comics. Read More →

thanatosdiver:

Some of Sam’s adventures don’t involve diving, or water, at all. Sometimes she finds herself lost in the mysterious and shifting sands of seemingly endless deserts, with nothing to light her way and mark her progress but strangely shining moon beacons.
But those beacons are few and far between, and the one she’s walking towards is quite old and unreliable. If she can’t reach it before the light goes out, she may be lost for good!

A behind the scenes peek at some location art from thanatosdiver, an all-ages adventure series coming this November from th3rdworldstudios! I wrote it, so I can tell you without bias that it’s totally awesome and you can definitely believe me.
We here at the Comics Tumblr are going to be hosting a column in the coming weeks, also written by yours truly, about creating “indie” comics. We’ll be focussing on everything from creating a pitch to putting a final book in front of readers. If you’ve got questions about any of that, I want ‘em. Hit me up over here:

These are a few months old (minimum) but I realized that I never posted them. All were covers for Invincible, drawn by Ryan Ottley and colored by me.

Work in progress as publisher, editor, designer, and all ‘round swell guy Michael DeVito (th3rdworldstudios) guides our first issue through pre-press!
Lettering first, followed by some proofreading, on-the-page dialogue edits, and final approvals. This is where the idea of a comic becomes a real thing, and it’s probably one of the most exciting parts of the process!(!!!)
After this it goes out to sites for advance reviews, to fellow creators for endorsements, to retailers so they know what they’re ordering, and, of course, to the printer once we’re solicited for our November release and we know how many copies we need to print.
Oh, and the second issue? Halfway done on the art. Expect that to be wrapped by the end of the month, give or take. By the time the first issue hits stores we’ll be finishing up the first arc, which means we can relax (just a little) before we hit the next volume.

Blast from the past with Charles Paul Wilson doing his best impression of Th3rd World publisher Michael DeVito. Forward to around 6:30 to see it. This was from our very first Free Comic Book Day, which was at Captain Blue Hen in Delaware.

Sam feeding some fishies at the beach on Cevaile Isle. Awwww.
This was our first go at bringing a character into the world as we intended it to look in the book (the watercolor-style market was a bit of an experimental departure, and a style we might come back to if a situation in the story allows).

Once more for the night crowd! We’ve been posting up some concept art all over the thanatosdiver page. New all-ages adventure comic starting this fall. Help us get the word out. Tell your friends.
If Facebook’s your game, you can find it at facebook.com/ThanatosDiver.
If you’re more the Instagram sort, we’re always posting process pics as @ThanatosDiver or instagram.com/thanatosdiver
We even have a Twitter, because we wanted to be cool: @ThanatosDiver (again) or twitter.com/thanatosdiver

Charles has been working up some classically plushed images for the next character to get the plush treatment! Get in on the discussion over at Facebook!
“Plushed Quackers! Trying out some different designs for each character and I like this one best for him. Also, I’m pretty sure we still have a bunch of Jester plushes available in Th3rd World’s shop for those of you who may be interested but haven’t picked one up yet.http://www.th3rdworld.com/shop/ And I think when we’re close to selling what we have we’ll move onto the next character. We’re still undecided who that’ll be just yet, but I’ll post different characters up here and maybe you can help us pick! - Charles”
